Murdoch University

Edith Cowan University

CSIRO Water for a Healthy Country Flagship

Australia’s best scientific research capabilities are being brought together to address the sustainable management of our water resources and deliver relevant and effective water management options.  With a total investment of approximately A$86 million per annum, the Flagship is the largest research partnership focussing on water in Australia. The partners include:

  • State and Australian governments
  • Private and public industry
  • Other research providers.

The Flagship aims to achieve a tenfold increase in the economic, social and environmental benefits from water by 2025.

Department of Environment and Conservation WA

The Department of Environment and Conservation (Western Australia) was established on 1 July 2006, bringing together the Department of Environment and the Department of Conservation and Land Management. The department has the lead responsibility for protecting and conserving the State’s environment on behalf of the people of Western Australia. This includes managing the State’s national parks, marine parks, conservation parks, State forests and timber reserves, nature reserves, marine nature reserves and marine management areas.

Its key responsibilities include broad roles in conserving biodiversity, and protecting, managing, regulating and assessing many aspects of the use of the State’s natural resources. The department contributes to the development of environmental protection policies, managing the environmental impact assessment process and carrying out regulatory functions to achieve improved environmental outcomes. It is also responsible for management of contaminated sites and coordination of pollution incident responses.

The department is also responsible for fire preparedness and pest animal and weed control on 89 million hectares of unallocated Crown land and unmanaged reserves.

Department of Water WA

The role of the Department of Water carries with it enormous responsibility and includes making sound decisions based on solid scientific evidence and accurate information. The Department collects and analyses water resources information, issues licences, regulates water use, protects the quality of WA water and prepares policies and plans critical to the future development of Western Australia.

Australian Government National Water Commission

The National Water Commission is responsible for driving progress towards the sustainable management and use of Australia's water resources under our blueprint for water reform - the National Water Initiative.

This intergovernmental agreement was signed by all governments at the June 2004 Council of Australian Governments (COAG) meeting, with the exception of Tasmania which signed the Agreement on 3 June 2005 and Western Australia which signed the Agreement on 6 April 2006.

Established under the National Water Commission Act 2004, the Commission advises COAG and the Australian Government on national water issues and the progress of the National Water Initiative.
